The Lasting Gifts of the Civilian Conservation Corps

In 1933, America was in the depths of the Great Depression. Unemployment stood at around 25%. As soon as he took office, President Franklin Roosevelt pushed for an employment program called the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The program succeeded spectacularly in its short term goals. In the long term… well, that’s what this article I wrote for mental_floss is really about.

wish they had something like that these days. but Americans have grown so selfish that to pay one additional cent in taxes is an affront to mom and the constitution. It seems that sometime during the 80's all Americans bought into the notion that selfishness is the *true* American way, and should any misfortune befall you, whether it be cancer or a layoff or a fall down the stairs, it's all on you.
