9 Cute and Clever Snowmen

Now that we've reached the end of February, it's time to round up our favorite snowman of the season before we bid them goodbye. Oh, we won't miss the cold weather at all, but it's nice to have the photographs of clever snow sculptures -after all, in August when we're sweltering under the sun, we can pull these up and admire them again! Meet nine of the best in a list I posted at mental_floss.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Monty Python's 1975 opus. From Wikipedia:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a 1975 British comedy film written and performed by the comedy group Monty Python (Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones and Michael Palin), and directed by Gilliam and Jones. It was conceived during the gap between the third and fourth series of their popular BBC television programme Monty Python's Flying Circus.

In contrast to the group's first film, And Now for Something Completely Different, a compilation of sketches from the first two television series, Holy Grail was composed of new material, and is therefore considered the first "proper" film by the group. It generally parodies the legend of King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. The film was a success on its initial release, and Idle used the film as the inspiration for the 2005 Tony Award-winning musical Spamalot.

Best Witness Statement Ever

The Crown Prosecution Service in West Midlands, England demanded a statement from a witness named PC Peach about an arrest. Officers on the case tried to explain that PC Peach was a police dog, but the demand for a statement stood. So the dog's handler made out a statement for the dog as best as he could.
The statement read: “I chase him. I bite him. Bad man. He tasty. Good boy. Good boy Peach.” It stated that the age of the witness was “four” and that his number was PD4341. The document was pinned to the wall at West Midlands Police Station, much to the amusement of colleagues. One officer took a photograph of the statement and it soon appeared on Facebook and on several police Twitter accounts.

The CPS, however, failed to see the funny side and complained to the police that their mistake had been turned into a very public joke. PC Mark Tissington, of West Midlands Police, who is believed to have shared the original picture of the witness form, has referred himself to the internal discipline unit although sources suggested he was unlikely to be reprimanded.

8 Underground Rivers

Rivers run underground all over the world. These occur naturally in cave systems, and have been known since antiquity. But this is about subterranean rivers that were once open to the sunlight and were buried by human hands (or heavy machinery). This happens when cities are built overtop, when wetlands are drained, and when existing waterways are consolidated and hidden to give people and their infrastructures more room to grow or move. In some of those places, people don't even realize there's a river running underneath their homes. Read about some of these rivers in an article I wrote for mental_floss.

CNN affiliate KIRO tested drivers who had smoked marijuana. Something that never occurred to me is how states with varying levels of legal marijuana use have to establish limits on how much would make you legally ineligible to drive a vehicle. That said, you should never operate a vehicle, or any heavy machinery, while impaired, legally or not. (via reddit)

In the Hospital

The doctor comes in and says, "Ah, I see you've regained consciousness. Now, you probably won't remember, but you were in a huge pile-up on the freeway. You're going to be ok, you'll walk again and everything, but your penis was severed in the accident and we couldn't find it."

The man groans, but the doctor goes on, "You have $9,000 in insurance compensation coming and we now have the technology to build a new penis. They work great but they don't come cheap. It's roughly $1000 an inch."

The man perks up. "So," the doctor says, "You must decide how many inches you want. But I understand that you have been married for over thirty years and this is something you should discuss with your wife. If you had a five-incher before and get a nine incher now she might be a bit put out and suspicious. If you had a nine-incher before, and you decide to invest in only a five incher now, she might be disappointed. It's important that she plays a role in helping you make a decision."

The man agrees to talk it over with his wife.

The doctor comes back the next day. "So, have you spoken with your wife?"

"Yes I have," says the man.

"And has she helped you make a decision?"

"Yes," says the man.

"What is your decision?"

"We're going with the granite countertops."
